I highly recommend a 1949 film entitled My Foolish Heart, currently available for free on Amazon Prime. Despite the title, you can stop rolling your eyes. The only authorized film adaptation of anything written by J.D. Salinger, it may not be perfect, but his authenticity made the unique cultural and situational pressures experienced by women and men during World War II real for me in a way that nothing else ever has. Moments of deeply intelligent exploration of the human condition abound. Though the film stars Susan Hayward and Dana Andrews, Robert Keith, who plays Susan Hayward’s father in the film, steals the show with his deft combination of serious passion and gentle humor.
